Dining at FirstLine Schools
We believe it is a fundamental right for all children to get delicious, healthy food at school. Many FirstLine students eat at least three meals a day from the cafeteria: breakfast, lunch, snack, and supper.
Edible Schoolyard New Orleans has an active role on the FirstLine Schools cafeteria management team. This team supports and manages the cafeteria provider in serving delicious, nutritious meals that our children are excited about eating. We work to ensure that:
school food is prepared in-house, from scratch in the cafeteria kitchen
students receive a minimum of 4-5 fresh fruits and vegetables per day
meals contain whole grains & high-quality meats
students have meal options, and those are communicated clearly
FirstLine Schools’ food service provider fulfills and exceeds USDA guidelines
our school cafeterias are welcoming, homey spaces with bouquets on the lunch tables and table toppers encouraging students to engage with and talk about food.
In addition, the cafeteria management team advocates for school meals to be seasonally appropriate, and for produce and meats to be locally procured when possible. Many of our schools compost food scraps from the cafeteria, completing the food cycle and nourishing the soil for the school garden.
Edible Schoolyard New Orleans is an active member of the Farm-to-School Network.
